This trend has accelerated over the past five years and partly explains the upward pressure on prices: brands know consumers are willing to spend—and they raise their prices accordingly.
The global luxury perfume market was worth $24.3 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach $45.8 billion by 2033. The niche segment alone—valued at $2.4 billion in 2024—is growing at an annual rate of 14.5%, almost double the overall market. These numbers reflect a rapidly expanding sector, with margins among the highest in retail—generally above 70% for niche brands and between 50 and 60% for the mass market.

The most surprising fact about the luxury perfume industry is this: the liquid fragrance—the product you actually buy—typically accounts for between 1% and 7% of the retail price. On a €150 bottle, you’re paying between €1.50 and €10 for actual ingredients.
The rest—93-99%—is packaging, marketing, distribution, retailer markups, and the brand’s margin.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the product isn’t worth its price. It does mean that when you buy a luxury perfume, you’re buying something more complex than a liquid in a bottle. But it’s worth understanding exactly what that is.

The pricing structure — item by item.

> The ingredients: fewer than you think, but not always.

Production costs in the perfume industry range between $8 and $200 per unit, depending on the quality of the ingredients, the complexity of the packaging, and the production volume.
For high-end and niche brands, the percentage dedicated to ingredients is significantly higher than for mass-market brands. Niche and high-end brands dedicate 40-60% of their production costs to high-quality ingredients and meticulous craftsmanship. This partly explains why certain niche perfumes cost less than certain designer ones—the quality/price ratio can be more fair when there’s no global distribution structure to maintain.
But some ingredients truly cost extraordinary amounts. Oud today fetches 50,000-80,000 euros per liter. May rose from Grasse can cost 5,000-8,000 euros per kilo. Iris absolute exceeds 100,000 euros per kilo in the highest-quality versions. When these ingredients actually appear in a formula, the cost is noticeable.
The problem is understanding when they’re actually there—and when they’re just mentioned in name.

> Packaging: the real luxury you’re paying for

Packaging accounts for 10-20% of total costs. But for luxury perfumes, this percentage can be much higher—and the logic is clear: the bottle, cap, spray mechanism, and secondary packaging all contribute to this cost, with luxury brands often investing heavily in design to justify premium prices.
Custom glass molds can cost between $5,000 and $30,000—a fixed cost that must be amortized over production. An elaborate bottle made of heavy glass with a metal cap can cost €15-20 per unit. For a production run of 100,000 pieces, this represents €1.5-2 million in primary packaging alone.

The practical consequence is this: when you buy a luxury perfume in a stunningly beautiful bottle, that beauty has a real cost—and it’s included in the price you pay.

> Marketing: the most opaque cost

Marketing and overhead can consume up to 90% of the retail price. This is the most controversial figure in the industry—and it must be read carefully.
What this item includes is enormous: global advertising campaigns, celebrity endorsements, the cost of display space in perfumeries, sales staff training, PR, events, and editorial collaborations. For luxury brands like Dior, campaigns featuring prominent spokespeople like Rihanna for J’adore contribute significantly to maintaining a premium positioning.
All of this is the cost of building and maintaining desire. Luxury perfume only works if there is a luxury imagery to support it, a value system in which the product exists as an object of desire.

Even the largest niche brands today give considerable weight and invest significantly in marketing, especially for exhibition spaces, training, events, social marketing and influencing.

Marketing has become an indispensable tool for surviving in the market. But it means that a significant portion of what you pay isn’t in the bottle.

> The distribution markup

The journey of a perfume from producer to final consumer often passes through regional distributors and retailers—perfumeries, department stores, and duty-free shops. Each step adds a margin. The result is that a significant portion of the final price has nothing to do with the product itself: it’s simply the cost of the chain that gets it to the final consumer.
This is why the same perfumes often cost less when purchased directly from brands online, in duty-free shops, or in less well-served markets. It’s not a paradox—it’s the logic of distribution.

The price increases of recent years: they are not all justified in the same way.

Luxury perfume prices have increased 30% compared to pre-pandemic levels. Some brands have raised their prices particularly aggressively: the price of a bottle of Creed Aventus rose from around $325 in 2019 to $495 in 2025. Chanel No. 5 went from €110 to €172 over the same period.
The stated reasons are real but partial: raw material cost inflation, post-pandemic supply chain instability, higher energy costs. But there is also a different phenomenon: luxury inflation as a positioning strategy. In some cases, raising prices is a deliberate choice to move the product into a perceived more exclusive segment—regardless of actual costs.
The distinction between the two is not always clear to the consumer.

What changes with niche brands

The niche model works structurally differently. Without the global distribution machine, without celebrity campaigns costing tens of millions, without the cost of department store space, a greater share of the price can go to the ingredients and the formula.
But beware: even in the niche world, positioning exists as a pricing tool. Not all niche perfumes that cost €300 contain €300 of olfactory value. Some use the niche format—the artisanal communication, the understated packaging, the authorial narrative—to justify prices that don’t always hold up to an analysis of the ingredients.
The more conscious consumer learns to distinguish between authentic niche and niche as a commercial aesthetic.

Cost per milliliter: the only honest comparison

A useful and rarely used method for evaluating a perfume is the cost per milliliter. Take the price of the bottle, divide by the number of milliliters, and you get a comparable figure across different sizes and brands.

Some indicative examples:
Chanel No. 5 EDP 100ml — about 172 euros → 1,72 €/ml
Tom Ford Black Orchid EDP 100ml — about 170 euros → 1,70 €/ml
Creed Aventus EDP 100ml — about 395 euros → 3,95 €/ml
Le Labo Santal 33 EDP 100ml — about 280 euros → 2,80 €/ml
Dior Sauvage Elixir 60ml — about 180 euros → 3,00 €/ml

This isn’t the only evaluation parameter—concentration, longevity, and the quality of the ingredients also matter. But the cost per milliliter helps you see markups more directly, and understand when a small format is proportionally much more expensive than the same perfume in a large format.

The smart answer: the secondary market

Understanding how the price of a luxury perfume is structured also helps us understand why the secondary market has its own precise logic.
Anyone selling a used perfume isn’t devaluing an object—they’re simply removing the marketing, distribution, and retailer markup they paid when purchasing it. The fragrance is the same. The ingredients are the same. The formula doesn’t change.
This is why buying a perfume on the secondary market and on Sceido can mean paying 30-50% less than retail—and receiving exactly the same product. Not because the seller is giving up anything, but because in the direct transaction between private individuals, all costs that aren’t related to the fragrance disappear.
The secondary market isn’t the “low-cost perfume market.” It’s the market where the price most honestly reflects the true value of what you’re buying.

Do you have a perfume you no longer use?
